Pyro Crew Prepares for Annual 4th of July Fireworks Display - June 10, 2010

WCF Charitable Fund Helps Offset Rising Costs of Event

Wamego, KS -- Wamego’s July 4th fireworks display is a long-standing tradition in the community. Trained and licensed community pyrotechnic volunteers donate time and energy to plan, order, and shoot the show. Known as the “Pyro Crew,” these members routinely volunteer more than 500 hours of personal time to prepare for the annual display. The show consists of more than 25,000 shells and delivers 30 minutes of sky-saturating, heart-pounding action.

“The show brings families together and former residents back home to Wamego,” said Chris Hupe, Pyro Crew member. “Visitors from near and far come into the community each year to witness the spectacle that has become uniquely Wamego. Major funding for the show comes from a host of grassroots business and individual sponsors. The financial generosity of the community allows this fireworks display to maintain its high-quality standards and remain the crown jewel of Wamego’s annual Independence Day Celebration.”

In 2005, the 4th of July Fireworks Fund was established with the Wamego Community Foundation. Tax deductible donations to the fund help offset the ever-increasing costs associated with the fireworks display. Donations to the fund may be made in person at the Wamego Community Foundation (1004 Lincoln St.) or WTC (1009 Lincoln St.); online at www.thewcf.org; or via mail to Wamego Fireworks Fund, P.O. Box 25, Wamego KS 66547. Checks should be made payable to Wamego Community Foundation Fireworks Fund.

“Thanks to the continued support and generosity from so many individuals, businesses and organizations, the fireworks display for 2010 is once again on its way to being a huge success,” said Lanny Bosse, who also serves on the Pyro Crew. “We hope the community enjoys the show we put on every year and continues to help support this amazing tradition.”

Since its inception in 1998 as a 501(c)(3), the Foundation has received approximately $1.3 million in gifts and donations and has distributed back more than $600,000 to the community, including toward area scholarships, the Wamego City Park Train Enhancement Project, and the Wam-Sag-Man Trail, just to name a few.
