Scherer and Umscheid Receive Pickering Awards from Wamego Community Foundation - May 28, 2010

(May 28, 2010) Wamego, KS — In recognition of their high academic achievements with the GPA’s tied at 4.16, Elizabeth Scherer and Jordan Umscheid, Wamego High School 2010 graduates, are recipients of the annual Pickering Award from the Wamego Community Foundation.

Scherer, the daughter of Eugene and Kathleen Scherer, Wamego, will be attending Kansas University, where she plans to major in exercise science/pre-physical therapy.  As a high school senior her academic honors include a Wamego City Hospital Scholarship through the Wamego Community Foundation, KU freshman achievement, Newman leadership and academic, Creighton academic, William Jewel Presidential, KU Athletic (rowing), KSU academic, State Scholar Curriculum completer and designated State Scholar, Honor Roll, Real Raider award, and Kansas Governor’s Scholarship. 

Umscheid, the son of Chris and Diane Umscheid, Wamego, is enrolled at Butler Community College where he will major in biology pre-physical therapy. His academic honors include a WTC Communications Scholarship through the Wamego Community Foundation, Briar Cliff Academic, William Jewel Presidential, Baker academic, Creighton academic, West Elementary Staff Scholarship, Kansas Honor Student, Honor Roll, Real Raider award, State Scholar Curriculum completer and designated State Scholar.

The Pickering Award Fund was established in 1984 by the children of B.C. and Vera Pickering in honor of their parents. The Pickerings were long-time residents of Wamego, where B.C. practiced law for many years. Originally created as a Trust and held at the Kaw Valley State Bank, the family transferred the funds to the Community Foundation in 2000. The Foundation oversees the administration of the endowed fund and annually distributes the fund’s earnings to two graduating seniors who hold the top GPA’s from Wamego High School.
