WCF to Host 11th Annual Scholarship Banquet - February 01, 2010
WCF to Host 11th Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet May 5
The Wamego Community Foundation (WCF) will host its 11th Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet on Wednesday, May 5, at 6 p.m. at the Wamego Middle School. Thirty scholarships will be granted to area students, including several scholarships established through the Kansas Rural Communities Foundation (KRCF), who is co-hosting the event.
The banquet is an opportunity to formally recognize the 2010 scholarship recipients for their scholastic achievements as well as the families and businesses that make the event possible by providing the scholarship and sponsorship funds. Scholarships are available to graduating seniors at Wamego, Rock Creek, Rossville, St. Marys, and Wabaunsee high schools and St. Marys Academy.
According to René Eichem, WCF and KRCF executive director, there are scholarships available specifically for students at each of the six schools, so students are not competing for scholarships against students at other schools. Students can begin applying online for the scholarships now by going to www.thewcf.org and clicking on the appropriate link for their respective school under “News and Important Announcements.”
“Students should pay special attention to the posted scholarship application deadlines, as each school has their own specific closing date for their students to submit applications,” Eichem said. “However, this year students will be able to submit applications online for the first time in the history of the scholarships, which should make applying for the scholarships a much easier process for them as well as for the various scholarship committees. Students will also be able to upload and submit their essays and activities summaries using the online form, rather than printing and submitting hard copies.
"The WCF Scholarship Committee plans to incorporate a few new things into the awards banquet this year,” Eichem noted, “including a video about the Foundation, which the multi-media design students at Wamego High School will produce and which will be shown during the event. We also plan to have a multi-media presentation running before, during, and after the program that will highlight and recognize our sponsors."
Eichem also noted that the table sponsorship and ticket order forms are also on their website at www.thewcf.org, and table sponsors would be able to submit their business logos via the online form as well.

The Wamego Community Foundation was established in 1998 and the Kansas Rural Communities Foundation was established in 2006; both are 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporations through which individuals, families, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and private foundations have been able to create funds and make gifts to benefit their communities. Donated dollars have established scholarships, built new community playgrounds, assisted families who have children with disabilities, and aided historical preservation, just to name a few.
