Friends of Wamego Public Library Establish New Fund
-
Nov. 8, 2010
The “Friends of Wamego Public Library Fund” has been established with the Wamego Community Foundation to raise charitable donations that will be used to support the Wamego Public Library now and in the future.
The Library has continued to grow and expand since its beginning in 1937. In August of 1991, the directors of the Kaw Valley State Bank offered their building at 431 Lincoln to the City of Wamego to be used for a new library. After nearly three years of fundraising, the Library opened at its new location during the summer of 2002. With the move, the Library grew from 5,000 to 7,000 square feet. Along with the added space for books, the Library has two computer rooms with internet access and a large, comfortable reading room.
Wamego and the surrounding communities are anticipating a population spurt due to growth in the bio-science industry. There will always be a need for technology, and that will require additional space.
The Wamego Public Library is supported through ad valorum (property) taxes, so funding is dependent on the economy. The new fund at the Wamego Community Foundation will allow interested individuals and businesses to make tax-deductible contributions to support adult programs, the summer reading program for both children and adults and purchase furniture for the reading room.
The Wamego Community Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and all donations made to the foundation and its funds are tax deductible as charitable contributions.

About the Foundation
The formation of Wamego Community Foundation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1998 created an efficient method through which individuals, families, corporations, non-profit organizations, and private foundations could make gifts to benefit the Wamego community and region. The existence of the Foundation provides the means for an accumulation of a substantial pool of funds over time. Wamego Community Foundation exists solely for donors to give through – not to – in order for donated dollars to continue working locally to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Wamego and the surrounding area.
