Wamego City Park Train Enhancement Project - October 01, 2008
History of the Miniature Train
1947
The “Tulip Blossom Special” was built by Ottaway Amusement Company of Wichita.
1955
The train was purchased for $5,000 by Wamego citizens Neil Balderson and Harold Stewart, who presented the train to the City of Wamego.
July 2007
More than 50 years of service carrying generations of children through the Wamego City Park has taken its toll on the train. The Wamego Chamber of Commerce started the "Save the Train Fund" through the Wamego Community Foundation (WCF) to raise money to save, preserve, and repair the miniature train located in Wamego City Park.
Summer 2008
Studies show that it would not be feasible to repair and maintain the existing train due to its age, lack of available parts, and safety issues.
September 2008
The City of Wamego proposes projects that may include:
• Building and maintaining a new electric train, which they plan to run on a designated schedule to be determined from spring through the fall;
• Preserving and permanently displaying the original train, either in the Wamego Museum or in a glass enclosed area of a new depot in the Park;
• Building a new storage shed for the new, longer train;
• Building new restrooms and shelter house that will resemble a train depot;
• Other City Park Railroad/Train enhancement projects.
