2008 WHS Valedictorian and Salutatorians Receive Pickering Awards from Wamego Community Foundation - June 09, 2008

(June 6, 2008) Wamego, KS — In recognition of their high academic achievements, Beth Neilsen, Wamego High School class of 2008 valedictorian, and Jarrod Krebs and Patrick Mattia, WHS 2008 salutatorians, are recipients of the annual Pickering Award Fund, a fund of the Wamego Community Foundation.

Neilsen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Neilsen, will be attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where she will major in computer science and pre-med. Krebs, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Krebs, will be majoring in computer engineering at Kansas State University in Manhattan; and Mattia, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Tony Mattia, will be attending Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO., where he will major in music.

The Pickering Award Fund was established in 1984 by the children of B.C. and Vera Pickering in honor of their parents. The Pickerings were long-time residents of Wamego, where B.C. practiced law for many years. Originally created as a Trust and held at the Kaw Valley State Bank, the family transferred the funds to the Community Foundation in 2000. The Foundation oversees the administration of the endowed fund, which is awarded annually to the valedictorian and salutatorian(s) of Wamego High School.

About the Wamego Community Foundation
The formation of the Wamego Community Foundation in 1998 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation created an efficient mechanism through which individuals, families, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and private foundations have been able to create funds and make gifts to benefit their community. Since its inception, the Foundation has received approximately $1.2 million in gifts and donations and has distributed back more than $500,000 to the community, including toward scholarships, the Wam-Sag-Man recreation trail, and the Friends of the Park, just to name a few.
