Area Students Receive $10,000 in Scholarships at Ninth Annual Awards Luncheon - April 30, 2008

(April 30, 2008) Wamego, KS — Today, 20 area high school students, two USD 320 Teachers of the Year, and one Volunteer of the Year were honored at the ninth annual Wamego Community Foundation scholarship awards luncheon at the Columbian Theatre.

More than 130 individuals, including the scholarship recipients, their families, and scholarship benefactors, attended the luncheon, and more than $10,000 in scholarship monies were granted to the following students:

At the event, Dr. Bill Ditto gave the invocation, the Wamego High School a cappella choir provided the music and the WHS Culinary Arts students served refreshments and dessert. The buffet-style luncheon was catered by Rambler’s Steakhouse, and the flowers in the table centerpieces were supplied by Flowers By Jan.

Lisa Diederich, WCF board member, was honored as the Wamego Community Foundation Volunteer of the Year. Diederich, one of the original founding members of the WCF, has served on the Board as treasurer for eight of the 10 years the Foundation has been in existence.

“Lisa is the true definition of a Wamego Community Foundation Board member,” said Doug Springer, WCF president, “with that definition being ‘to give of yourself for the betterment of the community.’”

During the awards ceremony, Monica Kabriel was recognized as the USD 320 K-5 Teacher of the Year, and Jennifer Topliff was recognized as the USD 320 6-12 Teacher of the Year.

Springer also noted that since its inception in 1998, the Foundation has received approximately $1.2 million in gifts and donations and has distributed back more than $500,000 to the community, including toward scholarships, the Wam-Sag-Man recreation trail, and the Friends of the Park, just to name a few.

The formation of the Wamego Community Foundation in 1998 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation created an efficient mechanism through which individuals, families, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and private foundations have been able to create funds and make gifts to benefit their community.
