ABOUT US
History
Wamego, Kansas, was founded in 1866 as a result of the development of the Union Pacific transcontinental rail line and the constant drive of American pioneers and immigrants to settle new lands. A growing community of more than 5,000 people, Wamego is steeped in history and filled with opportunities for the future. Those who have chosen Wamego as their home have a deep pride in preserving its character and providing improvements that benefit all citizens.
Wamego’s citizens have a long and proud tradition of
philanthropy and support of the community and its institutions.
From the development of what has been described as the most
beautiful city park in Kansas to the relocation and expansion
of the Wamego Public Library and the renovation of the Columbian
Theatre to the recent establishment of the OZ Museum, a heritage
of deep-rooted generosity has flourished in this charming Kansas
town.
Wamego Community
Foundation received its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit
corporation from the IRS in October of 1998. The first grants
to community non-profit agencies were awarded from endowed
funds in 2000.
The formation of Wamego Community Foundation created an efficient mechanism through which individuals, families, corporations, non-profit organizations, and private foundations could make gifts to
benefit the Wamego community and region. The existence of the
Foundation provides the means for an accumulation of a substantial
pool of funds over time. Wamego Community Foundation exists
solely for donors to give through – not to – in
order for donated dollars to continue working locally to improve
the quality of life for the citizens of Wamego and the surrounding
area.
